The Missouri River below Holter Dam is fishing very well. Flows are hanging in there at a little above 3,200 cfs today. Water temps continue to drop. We were at 53F this morning. Expecting some clouds over the next few days. Good news for the weekend fishing. Traffic on the river has already picked up today compared to mid-week. Expect it to remain a little busy until the weekend warriors head home. The boat launch at the dam is still closed, but there are quite a few trailers parked up there.
Dry fly fishing has been great with feeding fish throughout the river. Bugs are starting around 1 p.m. and the fish are reacting appropriately. Tiny Mayflies are the name of the game, Pseudos mostly. A BWO or two in the mix, but expect more from these little guys as the conditions improve. Some anglers are bringing in reports of great success while others are having a harder time with the dry fly. It can be tough, don’t get discouraged. Work on those reach casts and turning over long leaders.
Nymphing is picking up lots of fish. The usual is working. Smaller PT stuff along with some scuds, worms, and sow bugs. Fishing the faster water around islands or a seam along the bank is quite popular these days. People are there for a reason.
Streamers have been very popular. Lots of different colors and sizes going out the door. The most popular seems to be something around the #6 range in a darker color. Streamers are working throughout the entire day. Saw a few photos of some monster fish caught on the streamer over the past week.
