After a ton of fun Montana spring weather, there’s been a lot of moisture to come this week in the Helena area. That’s great news for water levels and fire season in Montana. The funky weather continues this weekend where Saturday looks to possibly have some more rain coming but once Sunday and Monday hit, the weather will be perfect! My tip is to get up early, and come to the shop. Hang out, soak in the knowledge, grab a free cup of coffee and ask about the fishing report in detail. It’s much better than staying in bed with kids jumping on you. In fact, bring the kiddos! They’ll love tales of the Missouri River.
Nymphs: Zebra Midge, Spanish Bullet, Tailwater Sow, Psycho May, Split Case BWO, Hairs Ear, Blooms Weight Fly, Duracell, Galloups UV Pupa, Kelleric Pick n’ Roll
***With the water shooting up to 6,000 cfs, it’s going to be a worm game for the next week or so. Pill popper on the bottom is a good choice. Anything green if you see BWOs hatching. You have to get your fly down with this higher water. So extra weight or a wire worm is good.
***Down on the lower part of the river, we’re seeing a lot of caddis around 2P till dark — just above Mountain Palace all the way to Pelican. Water temp cold enough that the fish are coming up aggressively for the caddis. You don’t have to wait as long for the set and you’ll be able to get away with 4x for the next few days. Still seeing a few baetis running around with the water temps going up a bit.
Streamers: Lil’ Kim, Game Changer, JJ Special, Sparkle Minnows, Flash Fry Zonker, Kreelex, Docs Articulator, Sparkle Yummy
***Brown trout are in on the banks and on the sharp drop. Cast and get the streamer moving immediately.
