Smith River Montana: Fly Fishing and Floating
Fall is knocking on the door and that means better fishing ahead, wearing waders once again -and selling off some of CCFS’s Rental Fleet! Every year at this time, we move out about half of our Rental Rafts that we rent for the Smith River and the MO and Blackfoot. It’s such a win-win for.. read more →
Here on the Mo’ we are proud to report that bugs are hatching, fish are looking up, and dry fly season is in full swing. Consistent cloud cover and mild to absent winds have made for ideal conditions for spotting—and casting to—rising trout. Despite the rain, flows are hovering nicely around 7K (7170 CFS currently)… read more →
After a week of moderate rain and a spike in output from the powers that be at Holter Dam, the Mo’ is on the drop and shaping up to fish nicely as we enter the heart/heat of June. Deep nymphing is rock-solid (as per usual for the high water of June). PMDs and caddis are.. read more →

I’m running out of novel ways to describe how good the fishing has been. Words like phenomenal, terrific, and world-class come to mind. The amount of rising fish some mornings and evenings is a spectacle you have to see for yourself. The PMD spinners are still the main event, but the Tricos should displace them.. read more →
Missouri River Fishing Report: It’s Spring on a high snow pack year so the MO is flowing heavy -more than twice the normal CFS. It’s at 12,400 cfs today when “normally” (whatever that means these days) it’s at 5,500. They (the Dam people) are calling for 12,900 by this weekend. The water out of the.. read more →
Worms, worms, and more worms……and I’m not talking about nightcrawlers! I’ve heard a lot of conflicting reports for the Smith the last couple weeks. Some people say they did ok, but not great; others are saying it was extremely slow. My group is fresh off the Smith, and to the slow and just ok reports,.. read more →
As we floated down the beautiful Smith River, most of us are more than ready to get our lines wet and fish hard. Personally, I just moved here from out of state, Alaska at that, so my knowledge of Montana consisted of only two things: one, Montana is a fly fishing state; and two, that.. read more →
Check out Teagan & Dorn’s Shide Shannel Shennanigans on our Facebook Page. A short video on what’s happening now on the MO. Missouri River Fly Fishing Report: There are rising trout up and down the river these days but cracking the code to get them to eat on top is not easy. But that’s the challenge.. read more →
