Some fluorocarbon fly-fishing leaders are blended with nylon, lessening the benefits of abrasion resistance and low visibility. Pure fluorocarbon Mirage™ has the highest abrasion resistance of any leader or tippet. And its refractive index is so close to that of water that Mirage is virtually invisible. With a specific gravity of 1.76, it breaks surface tension quickly and sinks quicker than nylon, perfect for nymphing. Fluorocarbon materials retain their knot and tensile strength in water. Preferred for nymphing, especially in gin-clear waters or where fish are educated. Great for large streamers too. Outstanding turnover power, the result of patented extrusion taper technology—an Orvis exclusive. Improved Mirage Big Game Leaders now fluorocarbon fly-fishing leaders with new tapers to give you better turnover when casting big game flies. Length 9′. 2-pack.
Size: 6, 8, 10, 12, 16, 20 lb. test
Shop Staff Notes: The Orvis Mirage Big Game Leader is an excellent, knotless, fluorocarbon leader to use on strong but wary big game species! Perfect on the salt flats for Bonefish, Permit and in the salt marsh for Redfish and Drum. Also a great choice for Steelhead and Salmon. These leaders do turn over very well and will help you present the fly when softer leaders just won’t turn over at the end of the cast. These differ a bit from their kid brother, the Mirage Fluorocarbon Trout Leaders, in their butt section diameter and on the tippet end. The Big Game Leaders go by the IGFA breaking strength instead of by the X diameter. Bonefish on the flats, get the 10lbs or 12lbs. If you’re doing a Redfish trip in LA with Captain Cooley, grab a couple packs of 20lb leaders and you’ll be set. Stainer uses the 16lb and 20lb for big, BC Chrome on his Spey rod set ups. These leaders are worth the extra price over nylon when you want every knot and cast to count! Don’t forget to pick up a matching spool of Mirage Tippet to go with these leaders.
