Refinement and improvement are the hallmark of quality. The new Orvis Hydros® Reel is the result of our own desire to make something great, that much better. We took a best-selling reel and removed unnecessary material to further reduce the weight while stiffening the narrow spool which minimizes line stacking. We changed the drag knob to be more ergonomically accessible and comfortable to use. We further refined the seal on the sealed drag to protect the clutch bearing in the drag mechanism. We radiused the reel foot as on the Mirage for kink-free leader protection. The fully-sealed drag with stacked carbon and stainless steel disc washers is still one of the strongest in the industry with zero start-up inertia. Matte type II anodized finish, standard large arbor size which balances better with lighter-weight fly rod, and yet still offers excellent retrieval rates and less line coiling than standard arbor reels. Matte black with silver accents, matte silver with charcoal accents. Imported.

Shop Staff Notes:  The updates and upgrades on the new Orvis Hydros Reel are practical and needed. The sizing now is a better fit for the trout size reels making a size III perfect for 5 and 6 weight rods. The Hydros SL was “super large” and made the III a little much for a 5 weight rod. The refining of the drag knob is really nice and now very comfortable to grab hold of to adjust drag pressure. The reduction in weight is also noticeable and goes well with the extreme lightness of all of the Orvis rods from Clearwater, Recon to H3. The radius reel foot is also another very nice refinement that allows you to wrap your leader around the reel when you hook your fly on the one of the guides when you “store” your rod in the boat or walking in to fish. There’s no chance of your leader becoming kinked or pinched around the traditional squared off reel foots of the old SL and most other reels on the market. This is the same that you’ll find on the premium, high-end reels like the Mirage LT and Mirage USA. At these prices, you really have a hard time finding a better trout to big game reel. We look forward to using the size IV and V on our Spey, big game and saltwater rods. (In 2021, we should have some pictures here of these reels with big Steelhead from Strainer and mammoth Redfish from Cooley!)
