The Mission Two-Handed 3-Weight 11′ 4″ Fly Rod is the lightest weight two-handed rod we offer. This trout Spey rod is great for swinging flies and will allow you to fish parts of the river your single-hander won’t reach. Ideal for soft hackles and smaller streamers in shallow water. The Mission 114-3 will help you uncover new possibilities in familiar waters. The Orvis Mission Two-Handed Rod Series is a comprehensive American-made seven-rod series encompassing the two-handed casting spectrum from compact and versatile 11-foot rods to big-water 14- and 15-foot models. Mission rods are the result of Helios™ 3 design advancement techniques, tested by experts from the Pacific Northwest to Europe. Helios 3 construction design dampens vibrations, making casts easier and more accurate with an inherent autocorrect that allows even a mediocre cast to be rescued by these rods. The increased hoop strength we obtain by using H3 construction means less energy lost and more efficient energy transfer. It is easier to develop fluid power in the cast with less effort, because the rods dampen quicker with no wobble, shooting long casts with accurate presentation. Made in USA.
Rod Outfits include: Rod, Reel, Line, appropriate size and amount of colored, Dacron Backing all spooled up, ready to go and with a rod tube and rod bag and reel case. Shop Staff Notes: The new Orvis Mission 1143-4 Trout Spey Rod is an awesome, light trout spey fly rod! It’s an excellent choice for someone looking for a versatile rod for swinging both small flies (like subtle soft-hackle patterns to sipping trout) up to all but the biggest streamers (like your average Buggers, Kreelex and Sparkle Minnows). It can throw heavier flies and sink tips but not in the wind and you’re not going to get great distances with it and you better watch out if your technique isn’t near perfect. If you like throwing bigger bugs, we would suggest bumping up to the Mission 1144-4. This 3-weight will do what most people want to do on the Missouri. It’s a beautifully made rod and it sure is fun to cast and fish! I know there are a lot of Rod Outfits we have put together but all of them are perfectly balanced for excellent casting -you just need to decide which fishing techniques you will mostly be doing and get the line best suited for that. If this is your first time with a Spey Rod and you’re just unsure, try starting off with the Outfit #3 with the Scandi-Short Versitip. You can use leaders you already have for your single-hand rod and it’s super easy to cast and fish from surface to deep. However, our most popular line in the past 3-4 years is the RIO Trout Spey -which would also be a great choice. If you have any questions, drop us and e-mail or certainly give us a call.
ROD OUTFIT NOTES:
Outfit #1 includes the new RIO InTouch TROUT SPEY Fly Line and 2, 10′ RIO Spey Versileaders. This line is easy to cast and is an integrated fly line -meaning there are no loop-to-loop connections so it slides through he guides easily. This line has plenty of power to make it super easy to cast. It’s a good choice for all around trout fishing -fishing dries on the surface, nymphing with indicators, stripping streamers or swinging streamers or soft hackles. (If you’re looking to use this rod mostly for streamers, we recommend using the #5 line. Let us know if you want us to do this for you with this package.)
Outfit #2 includes the new RIO InTouch SKAGIT Trout Spey Line and a set of 2 Skagit MOW Tips. If you want one of the easiest lines to cast and having a lot of power to turn over sink tips and/or heavy streamers, this line is the perfect choice. It’s also very easy to set up to use. All you need to do is add about 3′-6′ of butt section and tippet or just tippet material on the end and your MOW tip and you are ready to ply with the waters for aquatic adrenaline! (SET UP TIP: Take an old leader -doesn’t really matter what leader, just one that the tippet end is trashed. From the perfection loop at the butt section, cut it off so it’s about 3′ long. Then tie a LARGE perfection loop on the thinner end (leave the small loop that came on the leader on the butt section). Loop the small loop (on the butt section) to the end of the MOW Tip. Then loop about 12″-15″ of tippet material (like Mirage Fluoracarbon Tippet or RIO Fluoroflex Plus in 0X, 1X or 2X) on the end of that. Your fly will be tied to the end of that tippet material (I use a Non-Slip Mono Loop). You can pre-tie flies with the tippet and then just loop-to-loop them on the end of your leader, super quick, super easy -especially when your fingers are cold and numb. Also makes changing MOW tips a breeze, just doing loop-to-loop and never having to cut or tie on anything.)
Outfit #3 includes the very popular RIO SCANDI-SHORT VersiTip Shooting Head System that offers a lot of power for big, articulated flies but still allows you to deliver precise and delicate presentations for smaller flies or for swinging in shallow water or even skating dries on the surface. This line is great for newer Spey anglers or experts. All you need to add to this Outfit system is a Leader and some Tippet -and of course your fly. Scandinavian shooting heads are very popular in the Spey arena and this shorter version lends itself well to Trout Spey. The head length on this line is longer than the new InTouch Trout Spey.
Outfit #4 includes the awesome RIO SWITCH CHUCKER Fly Line and 1, 10′ RIO Spey Versileaders and 1, 10′ Light Skagit MOW Tip. This line is super easy to cast with lots of power and is an integrated fly line -meaning there are no loop-to-loop connections so it slides through the guides easily. This line is pretty versatile- it can chuck heavy sink tips and big flies just like a Skagit line but it does have a longer, tapered head and a long, 14′ handling section that allows for more types of fishing techniques. This line can fish effectively a Nymph Rig set up or even throw a dry fly (though it’s much better for skating dries, not fishing them up stream, dead drift -it’s too chunky and clunky to fish a dry fly delicately. Skating is good with this line. Strainer has used this line for skated dries for Steelhead in BC.) We include 1, 10′ RIO Spey Versileaders (3ips) and 1 RIO MOW Tip (10′ T-8). You can set up the leader system exactly as described in Outfit #2 above or just use standard 9′ or 12′ leaders.
Outfit #5 is the ultimate outfit in versatility as it includes the new RIO InTouch TROUT SPEY Shooting HEAD AND the RIO InTouch SKAGIT Trout Spey Shooting HEAD, a matched size RIO ConnectCore Shooting Line, 2, 10′ RIO Spey Versileaders and 2, 10′ RIO Light MOW Tips and a RIO Shooting Wallet to hold the tips and the shooting head not in use. This gives you the choice to easily switch from a lighter line for more delicate presentations to a more powerful line to chuck streamers -all on a single spool so there’s no need to buy a separate spool for your reel. To change techniques, it’s just a matter of loop-to-loop connections.
Outfit #6 is similar to #2 and #4 but is from the new Orvis Mission SKAGIT Shooting Head, a matched size Mission Shooting Line, 2, 10′ Orvis Mission Sink Tips. Super easy to cast and very effective at fishing medium to big streamers or when you need to throw heavier flies and/or sink tips to fish a deeper. Not that you can’t throw smaller flies or fish shallow, but Skagit is really good at hucking big junk with no effort.
Outfit #7 is similar to #1 but is from the new Orvis Mission SCANDI Shooting Head, a matched size Mission Shooting Line, and 2, 10′ Orvis Polyleaders (we may substitute RIO Versileaders if we are out of Orvis Polyleaders -FYI -they are almost exactly the same thing.) This is a good choice to easily fish smaller flies with a more delicate presentation. This line will throw bigger streamers but it’s not ideal for heavy streamers and/or heavy tips. Excellent choice for summer or early fall conditions when you don’t need to get down deep.
Outfit #8 is similar to #5 but is all Orvis and includes the Orvis Mission SCANDI Shooting Head AND the Orvis Mission SKAGIT Shooting Head, a matched size Mission Shooting Line, 2, 10′ Orvis Polyleaders and 2, 8′ Orvis Mission Sink Tips and a Shooting Wallet to hold the tips and the shooting head not in use. This gives you the choice to easily switch from a lighter line for more delicate presentations to a more powerful line to chuck streamers -all on a single spool so there’s no need to buy a separate spool for your reel. To change techniques, it’s just a matter of loop-to-loop connections.
