Performance wise these rods will still punch tight loops in the wind, while offering a level of flex to protect you from breaking off that fish. Benefits: This action will suit most anglers looking for the performance benefits of a faster action, while still wanting the versatility and feel of a deeper flexing rod.)

Shop Staff Notes: The Redington Hydrogen Trout Spey Rods are a delight to cast and fish. They are very light in the hand and are smooth and easy cast. The 11’6″ 4-weight is a perfect rod for the Missouri -either below Holter in the “Land of the Giants” section below Hauser. If you are new to Spey casting for trout, this is a great choice. Not a “starter” rod in terms of quality but priced right to be in the reach of many folks looking for great quality that’s not a budget buster. You won’t go wrong if you pick one of our custom matched rod Outfits. We put them together based on our experience and feedback from our Staff and Customers.
We have four Outfits that are a perfectly balanced and complete sets for easy casting and effective swinging & fishing:
Outfit #1 includes the very popular RIO SCANDI-SHORT VersiTip Shooting Head System that offers a lot of power for big, articulated flies but still allows you to deliver precise and delicate presentations for smaller flies or for swinging in shallow water or even skating dries on the surface. This line is great for newer Spey anglers or experts. All you need to add to this Outfit system is a Leader and some Tippet -and of course your fly. Scandinavian shooting heads are very popular in the Spey arena and this shorter version lends itself well to Trout Spey.
Outfit #2 includes the new RIO InTouch TROUT SPEY Fly Line and 3, 10′ RIO Spey Versileaders. This line is easy to cast and is an integrated fly line -meaning there are no loop-to-loop connections so it slides through he guides easily. This line has plenty of power to make it super easy to cast. It’s a good choice for all around trout fishing -fishing dries on the surface, nymphing with indicators, stripping streamers or swinging streamers or soft hackles.
Outfit #3 includes the new RIO InTouch SKAGIT Trout Spey Line and a set of 3 Skagit MOW Tips. If you want one of the easiest lines to cast and having a lot of power to turn over sink tips and/or heavy streamers, this line is the perfect choice. It’s also very easy to set up to use. All you need to do is add about 3′-6′ of butt section and tippet or just tippet material on the end and your MOW tip and you are ready to ply with the waters for aquatic adrenaline! (SET UP TIP: Take an old leader -doesn’t really matter what leader, just one that the tippet end is trashed. From the perfection loop at the butt section, cut it off so it’s about 3′ long. Then tie a LARGE perfection loop on the thinner end (leave the small loop that came on the leader on the butt section). Loop the small loop (on the butt section) to the end of the MOW Tip. Then loop about 12″-15″ of tippet material (like Mirage Fluoracarbon Tippet or RIO Fluoroflex Plus in 0X, 1X or 2X) on the end of that. Your fly will be tied to the end of that tippet material (I use a Non-Slip Mono Loop). You can pre-tie flies with the tippet and then just loop-to-loop them on the end of your leader, super quick, super easy -especially when your fingers are cold and numb. Also makes changing MOW tips a breeze, just doing loop-to-loop and never having to cut or tie on anything.)
Outfit #4 includes the awesome RIO SWITCH CHUCKER Fly Line and 3, 10′ RIO Spey Versileaders. This line is super easy to cast with lots of power and is an integrated fly line -meaning there are no loop-to-loop connections so it slides through the guides easily. This line is pretty versatile- it can chuck heavy sink tips and big flies just like a Skagit line but it does have a longer, tapered head and a long, 14′ handling section that allows for more types of fishing techniques. This line can fish effectively a Nymph Rig set up or even throw a dry fly (though it’s much better for skating dries, not fishing them up stream, dead drift -it’s too chunky and clunky to fish a dry fly delicately. Skating is good with this line. Strainer has used this line for skated dries for Steelhead in BC.) We include 3 different 10′ RIO Spey Versileaders (3ips, 5ips, 7ips). You can set up the leader system exactly as described in Outfit #2 above or just use standard 9′ or 12′ leaders.
