The Stimulator was created by Randall Kaufmann back in the 80’s as an effective stonefly pattern and just as a general attractor dry fly. It has gone on to become a classic and we sell LOTS of these flies every year. They float great, are pretty visible to the angler and, of course, the fish love them! This is a must-have pattern on freestone streams and rivers, like the Smith and Blackfoot.  This bug, especially in the larger sizes (#6-#10), is excellent to use in a dry-dropper set up with either another dry a couple feet behind (like a Parachute Adams, Purple Haze) or a nymph, like a Green Machine, Worm, or Mirage Nymph)

TIP #1- Since this fly can be pretty air resistant -especially if doing a dry-dropper and therefore, tougher to get to turn over at the end of the cast, we recommend bumping up a tippet size for a little extra energy transfer. On rivers like the Smith or Blackfoot, don’t be afraid to use a 1X or 2X on sizes #8 & #10 and 2X or 3X on #12 and even #14.
TIP #2- We like to tie these dry flies on using a Non-Slip Mono Loop Knot which will give it a lot more drift wiggle freedom and have a more natural presentation when using these stouter tippets.  When we use the smaller sizes on the MO, we like to use 4X still but this ins’t necessary on the freestones.
TIP #3- Use a 7.5′ Leader if you are fishing Stimulator & dropper and a 9′ Leader if you are fishing the Stimi solo.  TIP #4- Use a Nylon Leader to your dry, and Fluorocarbon Tippet to your dropper (weather it’s another dry or a nymph). The added stealth and slight negative buoyancy of fluoro is a good advantage in this set up.  Don’t fish a full fluoro leader with dry flies.
TIP #5- This Stimulator (along with any dry fly) works best when you dunk it in our liquid Jet Fuel Fly Floatant. Don’t forget to order a bottle when you order your Stimi’s! We have found that just 1 treatment of a dry fly in Jet Fuel will last for hours and a few fish -just be sure to wash off any fish slime and blow the fly dry after you catch and release a fish and your bug will be riding high once again.

Note- There may be slight variations from the photos as we have several tiers and slight differences in dye batches in the materials. But not to worry, all of them are fish catching morsels!  Also, not all colors are available in all sizes.
