Description
Tungsten Firebead Sowbug
Sizes: #12, #14, #16, #18
The Tungsten Firebead Sowbug is a soft hackle Sowbug fly pattern with a TUNGSTEN Firebead (hot-orange) for the extra weight needed to get your flies down to the fish. An excellent “lead fly” in a two-fly set up or a great choice for higher flow conditions. Super effective on the Missouri River and many other tailwaters and freestone streams, especially in the winter through spring. This is a must-have fly if you want to be successful in the Land of the Giants (LOG- the Missouri below Hauser Dam)
Missouri River Tip: During the Spring when we get higher water flows (say above 7,500cfs), here’s a great way to fish using this fly either as the first fly in this set up or as the dropper. [If your using this Firebead Tungsten Sowbug as the lead fly (aka “top” bug), use the #12 or #14. When using it as the dropper bug, use the #16 or #18.] Use one of our Thingamabobber Nymph Rigs: 1-Drop 4′-6′ of 2X off the swivel, 2-Add 12″-15″ of 3X, 3-Tie on a #12 – #14 Tungsten Firebead Sowbug or a #4 – #6 Wire Worm, 4-Tie on 12″-15″ of 4X off the Tungsten Firebead Sowbug or Wire Worm (either on the bend of the hook or from the eye), 5-Tie on the #16 or #18 Tungsten Firebead Sowbug (or Firebead Caviar Scud or Pink Lightning Bug, or Firebead Rays). Add a B or BB Split Shot on the 2X tippet above the knot with the 3X (then it never slides down to your fly). We use fluorocarbon tippet (Mirage or RIO FFP) because it sinks quicker, is more abrasion resistant and is stealthier. When fishing from a boat (which is a must above 7500cfs), set your indicator to about the depth you are fishing (i.e.- fishing in 8′ of water, set your depth with your indicator to about 8′ from your bottom nymph to the indicator.) [If I’m wade fishing I try to set the depth of my indicator about 1.5X the depth I’m fishing. i.e.- fishing in 6′ of water, set your indicator to about 9′ from bottom bug to bobber.] The Thingamabobber Nymph Rig makes it super easy and quick to adjust your depth as you move from spot to spot.
There may be slight variations from the photos as we have several tiers and slight differences in dye batches in the materials. But not to worry, all of them are fish catching little morsels!
